Curriculum Statement- Physical Education (P.E) at Arundel Court

intent

At Arundel Court Primary Academy School, we aim to provide a PE curriculum that is inclusive of all pupils throughout the school.  Our main aim is to provide them with a broad range of physical activities/sport that will ensure they have the knowledge to develop their health, fitness and mental wellbeing throughout their life.  We intend to offer a high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities, dependent on their individual physical abilities. Opportunities to compete in sport and other physical activities build character and self-esteem as well as embedding values such as sportsmanship and respect to others inclusive of their ability.  As a school, we very strongly promote the emphasis of healthy competition but most importantly, the inclusiveness and enjoyment of all.

The national curriculum for PE aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives
  • ensure the inclusiveness of all

implementation

Children take part in regular P.E lessons to improve their agility, coordination, balance, movement, physical fitness and health related knowledge.  The curriculum is further enhanced by participation in numerous sporting tournaments with other schools in the area, festivals, breakfast club and after school clubs. Active break times are encouraged throughout the school alongside ‘The Daily Mile’.  Year 5 children are trained as ‘Change for Life’ leaders for activities at break and lunchtime.  As an Active School, we aim to ensure that the children participate in active lessons outside of their regular PE lessons. This involves incorporating moments within lessons whereby the children can be active.  Various opportunities for this come up throughout the year from the Portsmouth Sports Partnership as well as The Daily Mile.  We follow the guidelines set by the national curriculum to ensure we offer a range of PE activities that allow every child to feel challenged and offer opportunities to progress further as well as most importantly gaining enjoyment from taking part.

impact

As an active school, all our children gain an understanding of the benefits to health of physical activity both now and in their future lives.  Children progress each year which they observe through their own individual achievements both in our schemes of work and through their own individual physical abilities. They are eager to attend extra-curricular clubs, intra and inter-school competitions/festivals no matter what their individual needs or physical abilities.
